Originating from personal affection toward Seoul, Twelve Scenes portrays the spectacles in daily life by juxtaposing urban space in a twelve month sequence. As the individual particles in kaleidoscope create splendid illusions by being reflected on a mirror, Twelve Scenes shows our individual life, that seems separated by time and space, actually composes the scenery in the kaleidoscope of Seoul. The personal lives of the audience also build up the scene together.
Each shot was a one-take-shot. As a result, there are no changes to the frame size, movement, or editing. Like a piece of landscape painting on the wall, just twelve scenes showing ordinary, yet tranquil spaces around us. The audience enduring this tranquility will witness unexpected events, namely daily dramas or spectacles. Thereafter, these spectacles will be converted instantly to the surreal landscapes of the inner side through sounds of silence. Twelve Scenes represents a 'moment for self-reflection' or 'small, but precious enlightenment on life'. This portrays a poetic resonance through a contemplative viewpoint that captures the vivid spectrum in life.
Twelve Scenes was produced with a 'one scene a month' principle. Therefore, when not being able to capture the right moment or structure, shooting would be delayed until the following year. Eventually, it took 4 years to achieve Twelve Scenes, far from the original one-year project.
